Description

Bridging Acts: A Dialogue Between Motion and Media is a NYSCA-funded, one-night-only interdisciplinary performance directed by Buffalo-based artist Lewuga Benson. The work brings together contemporary dance, live video capture, projection, and sound to explore how memory, perception, and embodiment shift through technology. Structured in two acts with an intermission, the performance unfolds as a live exchange between dancer Alexandra Light and video artist Clayton Colin. In Act I, Colin captures Light's movements in real time, translating choreography into mediated image. During intermission, the footage is edited live. In Act II, Colin attempts to reconstruct the choreography from memory-first physically, then through projection-revealing distortion, interpretation, and loss. Inspired by Merce Cunningham, Michael Clark, and Charles Atlas, the work challenges the camera's role as passive observer, positioning it instead as an active participant in performance. The performance will take place at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts (Black Box Theatre, Room 103-downstairs left, North Campus) on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 6:30-7:45 PM. Admission is free and open to the public. Visitor parking is available in nearby lots adjacent to the Center for the Arts. Doors open at 5:30 PM; performance begins promptly at 6:30 PM. Additional artist talks will be held at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center (July 22, 7:00-8:30 PM) and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (July 23, 1:00-2:30 PM). This project is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and is supported by Art Services Inc., the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center.
