Description

Fauquier Community Theatre Presents World Premiere of Original Musical "Tales of the Artisan" Vint Hill, VA - Fauquier Community Theatre (FCT) is proud to announce the world premiere of Tales of the Artisan, an original musical created by the award-winning team of Matt Moore and Cate Murray. This new production will run May 1 through May 17, 2026, at the Vint Hill Theater on the Green, located at 4225 Aiken Drive in Warrenton, Virginia. Tickets are available at www.fctstage.org. Featuring book and lyrics by Matt Moore and music and lyrics by Cate Murray, Tales of the Artisan is a "heartwarming, gripping, sometimes whimsical but always moving" story of a Scots-Irish Gaelic family fleeing political persecution in 1814 America. Blending elements of coming-of-age storytelling, action, and folklore, the musical transports audiences into a world of magic, mystery, and early American tradition. Directed by Moore, with Murray serving as music director, the production showcases an ambitious score rooted in early folk traditions, complete with lush harmonies, dynamic choreography, and jaw-dropping special effects. "This show is about legacy, survival, and the stories families carry with them," said writer and director Matt Moore. "We wanted to explore how history, culture, and even a touch of magic shape who we are-and what we pass on." Composer and librettist Cate Murray emphasized the musical's unique sound and emotional scope. "The score draws from Scots-Irish musical traditions and early American folk," Murray said. "It's intimate at times, but it also expands into something epic as the family's journey unfolds." At the center of the story is Jack Spadean, a mysterious figure with a hidden past, traveling with his family as they navigate danger and uncertainty in a new land. Along the way, audiences meet a rich cast of characters, including Queenie, Jack's hopeful daughter, the menacing Captain Fallow, and Siobhan, whose strength anchors the family through hardship. There are a total of 18 characters, including numerous whimsical and sometimes dangerous family members, soldiers, and beautifully imagined fairtale creatures. "We don't spend our time fighting back," Jack reflects in one of the musical's defining moments. "No -instead – we fight forwards." Queenie, filled with optimism despite the dangers surrounding her, offers a different perspective: "I'm tired of waiting, waiting for something that just seems to hide away inside my soul!" The production features a large ensemble cast of local performers and an award-winning creative team dedicated to bringing this original work to life with immersive staging, period-inspired design, and theatrical magic. Performances will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM throughout the run. All performances are held at the Vint Hill Theater on the Green, Fauquier Community Theatre's home venue.
